The
course is a pleasant, yet challenging, 18 hole parkland course with superbly manicured
rolling fairways and a liberal sprinkling of fine old trees, and is virtually
an oasis on the doorstep of a teeming metropolis. Our speedy greens have attained
a standard of excellence and discerning visitors regularly tell us that they are
amongst the best to be found around the country. Although a relatively short
course, its narrow fairways and punitive rough call for accuracy off the tee and
will test the players' golfing skill. Each hole presents its own challenge which
can catch the unwitting golfer off-guard. Shot-making skills must be complemented
with accurate club selection in order to post a good score. Our course is best known
for its famous 12th hole (par 4, index 1), which was re-designed in 1998 by the
late Tom Craddock, course architect. It is known locally as 'The Quarry Hole'.
You have firstly to drive from the tee onto a raised plateau, bordered by out
of bounds on the right. You then have to play your next shot to the green in a
valley (once an old quarry), with two ponds and two greenside bunkers intervening.
A large bunker to the rear of the green also gathers up an over-hit approach shot.
This hole has ruined many a good score card in its day and is an inviting challenge
to any keen golfer to make par at it. While this particular hole will always provide
interesting stories for the '19th', the overall challenging golf experience of
playing at Clontarf will leave long-lasting and pleasurable memories. Our
