St. Michael’s House – Clontarf Friday Friends

Clontarf Friday Friends

A new initiative started in the club between St. Michael’s House and Clontarf Golf and Bowling Club in May of this year. The main organisers were Raymond Maguire and Alan Smith.  It was proposed that volunteers from the club teach those attending St. Michael’s House some golfing skills.  Ray and Alan put out an alert to all club members and were grateful to receive a considerable amount of interest.  Eamonn Brady provided golf equipment and helped the members set up the various activities, and in the early stages helped with the teaching.

Each week approximately 24 people from St. Michael’s House came to Clontarf to take part.  There were five different areas of activities, three set out in the practice area, one on the chipping green and one on the putting green.  Each group from St. Michael’s House attended for six weeks, after which a new group would attend.  This continued throughout the summer until the end of September.

The volunteers from the club put in a lot of effort and thought into teaching the students the skills of golf.  Each week the best players received a trophy which was returned the following week.  The competition for the trophy was hard fought and was a great incentive for improvement.

The volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and hope it is something that can be repeated.  A huge thank you to Ray and Alan for taking the time to organise such an important event for the club.

Clontarf Friday Friends Season Ends

The Club’s Special Olympics Golf and Bowling Programme in partnership
with St Michael’s House  known as  “Clontarf Friday Friends”
completed its inaugural season last Friday. The  season which  ran
every Friday morning from May to September involved 25 club members
who acted as coaches in golf and bowling to a core of 60
participants..

C.F.F. appreciated the broad and deep support it found for the
initiative throughout all sections of the Club without which it would
have been difficult to sustain. In particular, it is indebted to Eamonn
Brady and his team for their continuous support throughout the season
which included coaching, advice and equipment and proved invaluable to
the smooth running of our Friday sessions.

Over  a year ago  we visited Elm Park Golf Club to learn of their
Programme which was established in 2005 and we were told that” their
weekly sessions were always such happy events that all involved came
away every time with a light heart ” that feeling was ever present in
our experience this year.

Finally C.F.F. will hold  a celebratory function in November to
officially mark the end of our first year at which there will be a
presentation of completion certificates to all the Golfers and Bowlers
to mark their attendance throughout the season.

Ray Maguire & Alan Smith.

Ladies Away Trip to Ballymascalon

The 2022 away trip for the Ladies Club in the Ballymascalon Hotel and Golf Course was a great success.  We had two great days of golf along with a sing-song or two!  A great way to get to know members in the club.  Thank you to Lady Captain Mary for arranging the whole trip.
