Lord Mayor’s Cup (Sponsored by Killester Travel)
ENTRIES NOW OPEN FOR PRESTIGIOUS LORD MAYOR’S CUP
Clontarf Golf Club is now accepting entries for the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Cup (8th–14th August), sponsored by Killester Travel.
There are 192 places available and entry is open to members of affiliated golf clubs who hold a handicap index of 2.5 to 9.5 on the date of the qualifying round.
The event has a rich history and it is firmly established as one of the most popular fixtures on the Irish amateur golf calendar. The match play format produces plenty of thrills and spills, which attracts a full timesheet each year embracing eligible golfers of all ages.
The Lord Mayor’s Cup dates back to 1951, which was a memorable year in Irish golf. Royal Portrush famously hosted the 80th British Open Championship, the first time the event had been held outside of Scotland or England.
This year marks the 70th staging of the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Clontarf. The event was the brainchild of sports enthusiast Jack Belton, the then Lord Mayor of Dublin and former Captain of Clontarf Golf Club.
The 18 holes singles strokes qualifying round, played on a scratch basis, will take place on Sunday, 8th August. The leading 64 players will qualify for the match play rounds which will continue through the week with the semi-finals and final on Saturday, 14th August.
The Lord Mayor’s Cup has been won by participants from 26 golf clubs across the country, including clubs as far flung as Lahinch, Rosslare, Laytown & Bettystown and Royal Tara.
Topping the list of multiple winners are three-timers Don Macaulay (Donabate/Portmarnock, winner in 1952, 1953 and 1974) and Cyril Darcy (Corballis/Forrest Little, winner in 1968, 1969 and 1971).
Clontarf members have recorded twenty-eight victories in the event, with Jack McGuinness, Donal Heron and John Harrington claiming two victories apiece.
Club Captain Dave Dalton remarked, “Since its inception in 1951 the Lord Mayor’s Cup has stood the test of time with colossal entries year after year. With last year’s event cancelled due to Covid restrictions there is huge interest already in this year’s tournament. Clontarf Golf Club looks forward to celebrating the 70th staging of this great competition in August and we wish to thank Killester Travel for their continued support.”
Sean Skehan (Killester Travel) commented, “As a company with a long tradition of offering golfers opportunities to play the finest courses across the world and make great new discoveries on their golfing travels, we are delighted to be associated with the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Clontarf Golf Club, an event that is steeped in history.”
